UCLA is organizing a wonderful series (concerts, lectures, and more) on the musical intersections in the Middle East: Listening to the Other: Mideast Musical Dialogues. The official announcement went out last night.

Unsurprisingly, its amazing lineup overlaps a great deal with the materials we will be covering this semester. For example, a recording of music performed by Taiseer Elias (oud) is on our listening list this week. Later in the semester we will be listening to music by two Israeli female composers, Tsippi Fleischer and Betty Olivero. And the concluding symposium features our very own UC Berkeley colleague (and Music in Israel guest lecturer), Professor Benjamin Brinner.
